Like anything else, general cleaning and maintenance should be done at least once annually. We utilize simplified profile designs, as well as some of the best hardware in the industry to minimize the efforts you need to put behind keeping your Ducana windows in “like new” condition. Following these simple steps will insure the longevity of your windows:
1. Have your windows professionally installed. In our experience most DIY’ers that have never done window or door installations before end up having issues with window operation. It is not as easy as our certified installers make it look. Without the proper shimming, insulating and exterior finishing you are headed for trouble. Binding hardware, water and air leakage are almost inevitable. You can pay anything you want for a window, but if not installed properly it becomes worthless. Do not take chances with unqualified installers.
2. While cleaning your windows on the outside, check for cracks in your caulking or for areas of caulking that have pulled away from your window or exterior wall. Ducana's certified installation crews use some of the best materials in the industry; however no caulking will last forever. To avoid water damage to the interior or air infiltration, keep a tube of caulking in the colour used originally on hand. This will allow you to patch areas of concern immediately before having water or air leakage.
3. Ensure your windows exterior hardware is lubricated at least once a year. We suggest the use of a silicone spray on your mechanisms and sliding tracks. After a thorough cleaning and allowing the hardware or tracks to dry out completely, apply a liberal amount of the silicone spray to the entire length of the exterior hardware and track, both top and bottom. This will ensure smooth operation for years to come. (TIP: Can’t find silicone spray? Use Pledge). Pledge has a silicone base and repels dust and dirt. Smells good too.)
4. The most common question is: What do I use to clean my window frames? While any glass cleaner is fine for the glass it is not recommended for the frame of your window. We recommend using a soap designed for your vehicle. These soaps do not contain harsh chemicals that will harm your vehicles paint, nor will they harm your window. These also work great on the glass itself as they are also designed to limit streaking. Do not use abrasive cleaners! Cleaners such as Comet have small abrasive particles that will scuff the surface of your windows. These scuffs will remain for the life of the product.
5. Exterior screens should be removed and stored each winter. Melting snow or rain that freezes can sit between the mesh fibres and refreeze causing them to push apart and create holes. Falling icicles have been known to tear screen mesh on their way to the ground. When removing screens ensure they are stored flat on the floor. Under a bed or on a shelf works well. Do not store screens standing straight up on the edge. This can lead to warped and bent fitting screens next spring.
